What started originally as a modest feasibility study and design for a full service, urban $6-million YMCA branch to be built within the shell of an existing historical industrial loft building evolved over time into a new, multi-structure, state-of-the-art $10-million regional facility.
The Trenton YMCA was in desperate need of a central program facility since its original, historic structure [the site of the first professional basketball game – an NBA landmark] was torn down to make room for new development. Operating out of a converted supermarket branch, the board commissioned a feasibility study and design for a full service family and fitness center to be located in the historical Roebling Industrial Complex.
As a new site and funds became available, the YMCA found the opportunity to consider a comprehensive regional facility in a new complex of buildings. The new complex included a full time day care center; program building; a wellness center with separate adult and youth areas; a double court field house, and a 5-pool aquatic center.
